Dorm-Approved, Healthy Meals
Statistically, 62.7% of high school graduates attend college or an institution of post-secondary education. Of that percentage, about 20.7% of college students graduate annually. College is a difficult shift for most freshmen; an influx of new people and classes is intimidating. Among these issues, the food that the university provides can contribute. Almost 50% of undergraduate students agreed to food-related problems. The stress of classes is enough; worries about food should not be necessary. Here are options for healthy, inexpensive meals that can be made right in the dorm.
1. Peanut Butter and Banana Sandwich
Bread, bananas, and a jar of peanut butter are easily accessible and can be found at a local grocery store or market. Individually, these ingredients are under 200 calories. The total cost is around $10, and would be covering multiple sandwiches. You can make it toasted or regularly. In the toasted version, you simply put it in the microwave, an appliance that is usually provided in dorm rooms. Click here for the recipe.

Hi Abbey! I found this blog super helpful as I have been struggling with finding good food to fuel my body! I love the idea of a peanut butter and banana sandwich because of the total cost only being $10! I have never thought about making enchiladas in my dorm. Enchiladas are a food that my family and I often cook together, so this is something reminiscent that I will have to try. I normally prioritize cost and nutrition of my food choices. I typically have enough time in between classes, so I will definitely try these recipes!

DeleteHi Abbey, I found your blog to be a great read! I like the simplicity behind the meals you provide. College students are so busy, and don't have time to make extensive meals, so simple meals are the way to go. Currently I have no problem getting enough food from the dining halls. I also prioritize time to eat and enjoy meals without rushing. However, I am living off-campus next year, and will need to make my own meals, so your tips will be helpful!

It is also convenient to have meals in the dorm when I don't feel like going to dining hall or outside places. After reading your post, I appreciate how quick, easy, and inexpensive your suggestions are. I have made peanut butter and jelly sandwiches in my dorm before, but I have never thought to make enchiladas! Overall, I do try to prioritize healthy eating, focusing on proteins and vegetables, but it can be difficult in this environment.
